As someone who relentlessly identifies as a feminist, I found my passion for helping the women that are invisible. When hearing the word feminism, most people think of the constant struggle of the establishment of woman's rights. I am writing this to tell you the horrible traditions and undeniable facts from developing countries and the way their women are treated. These monstrous acts have been left unnoticed for far too long. Imagine not deemed worthy of an education. Girls from around the world are limited of proper education, which drastically limits their opportunities for the future. These girls are treated as worthless beings. What's even more disgusting is the fact that most girls will be sexually assaulted, and there's nothing they can do about it. At the age of 15, more than 250 million girls were forced into marriage because of dehumanizing "traditions". Not only does this rob girls from their childhood, but they can suffer from development issues due to early pregnancy, they are vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases, and are at increased risk of domestic violence. Seeing a pubescent girl forced into marriage with an older man is considered "normal" in these hidden countries. From early childhood these young girls endure pain that are forced upon them. This includes a horrendous procedure called female genital mutilation. Mothers tell their daughters, "it is time for you to become a woman." They are strapped down onto a medical table, naked, surrounded by razors, knives, glass, and having no power. Just the excruciating pain in between their legs, and a loss of themselves. No benefits come from this, but infection and disease. All of this, to be considered "worthy" for men. Learning this information, I felt an array amount of guilt and despair. There must be something I could do. I am a feminist. Not just for myself. But for the world. For the women who are invisible. We cannot stay silent. We cannot accept it as "tradition". But take charge and bring awareness. No way in any circumstance, should a human being be robbed of their value. If we help these women, we will help the world.
